Ideal Ways To Find the Beat in Salsa Music

While the most famous musician of Europe in the times of Mozart was a composer of African descent, the Chevalier de Saint George, Europe's premier violinist, fencer, colonel, and conductor of the largest orchestra of France, that of Queen Marie Antoinette, his incredible story remained submerged beneath the sands of time by European academia just like the socio-cultural contributions of the African peoples of the Empires of Ghana, Mali and Songhai whose men, women and children settled the New World...

From Timbuktu to the Mississippi Delta Conclusion

As a child of mixed Senegalese and French heritage who grew up in Mali, Senegal and France and whose journey led him to teach Jazz in the United States of America, I was always fascinated and intrigued by the level of cultural amnesia and the dearth of academic information that existed with respect to the socio-cultural contributions that West Africans taken from their continent through slavery had brought to the United States of America for 350 years. As an outsider looking in, I was often puzzled by and sought to understand why European Americans generated dance moves and rhythmic expressions on the dance floors of the US that were closer in aesthetics to those of West Africans than the original dance moves of their informed European ethnic heritage from Vienna or the Paris Opera.

From Timbuktu to the Mississippi Delta Introduction

Neil Diamond is one of those rare singers that has staying power. Quite a few years ago Garth Brooks said that a true test of an artist is how long they will last. Neil also has another rare trait that never ceases to amaze me. Because of his magnetism in his concerts he connects with his audience almost like no other. He was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame which was long overdue.

Musicians Have Learned How To Indulge

As a singer doing small gigs, performing Hindi Film songs from the 1950s to the 1970s, I was always struck by the warmth of the music that we seemed to have in those days. I strive to put that feeling, that warmth, in my performances despite working with good equipment. The digital, computerized age, has made recording crystal clear, and the effects are astounding. But the warm, fuzzy feeling has gone for good.

Making Music in Hindi Films Then and Now

When you're tasked with organising the entertainment for a social event you may find searching for worthy acts to be quite difficult, even if you've spotted an act you are considering hiring that has great credentials you may still have a sense of uncertainty as they're probably total strangers. You have to give your soloists or band a great deal of trust especially if you are unfamiliar with them as you're bound to wonder if they'll even show up, it's also possible that you inadvertently hire a band that's not up to the job and they could potentially turn your event into a disaster.

Musicians Are Real People With Hobbies

Rockabilly's brightest luminary, Carl Perkins, once said that of all the honors he'd received in his life, having a child abuse prevention center named after him was the one he cherished the most. Perkins, whose 1956 smash crossover hit "Blue Suede Shoes" (it was the first song ever to sit near the top of each of the pop, country, and R&B charts) defines the essence of rockabilly, was the co founder of the Exchange Club Carl Perkins Center For the Prevention of Child Abuse in Jackson, Tennessee.

A Virtual Smorgasbord For Exhibitions Around The World

For this art journal entry I have decided to select the Venus of Willendorf statue as my selected art piece. This 25,000 year old oolitic limestone statue even today remains a complete mystery to the historians who study it. Of particular interest is that oolitic Limestone is not local to the Krems area of Austria. The Venus received her name from the region in Austria where the small statue was excavated. What makes the statue so unique to art historians is the fact that it is the first of its kind to display such details.

How to Find Legal Music Online for Free

Believe it or not, rock and roll is almost 60 years old now. Music that could be labeled "rockabilly" started appearing in the early 50s. In fact, some say that the Maddox Brothers and Rose were recording rockabilly music as early as the late 40s. But it's generally agreed that rockabilly was born in February of 1954 when Elvis recorded "That's All Right" for Memphis' Sun Records. No matter exactly when you peg the release of the first rockabilly song, the genre is getting undeniably old. But it's standing the test of time remarkably well.

Rockabilly Is Aging Well

Mahalo ukuleles are cheap yet playable and beautiful ukes that are mostly made in China. They may not be the greatest ukulele in the world but they are constructed from decent materials and can produce acceptable tune. For someone who wants to get started to play and strum some music with a uke but does not want to spend hundreds of dollars, this is definitely a great choice.

Rent Karaoke CDs for Your One Time Event

Up until a few years ago the only option for buying a guitar was to find a music shop in a high street, or more often than not a back street. With the coming of the information age the internet has changed the way we do many things in our lives, including the way many of us buy guitars. For many of us guitar players the thought of buying and paying for a guitar sight unseen would be unheard of, but a quick look at the auction sites show just how many instruments are being bought and sold.

Yamaha FG700S Acoustic Guitar Review

The post World War II years in America saw an explosion of musical art. The war was over, the boys had come home, and the production prowess of the nation shifted away from the war machine back to the consumer goods that it had originally been set up to pump out. Many of our musician soldiers too returned to their vocation of creating music. Country music, jazz, swing, and other forms of popular music didn't just pick up where they left off, they began thriving and moving in new directions as musicians experimented with musical influences they might have picked up overseas and a new musical freedom that availed itself along with the freedom from war that the country had been longing for. From this new expression, rockabilly sprouted and grew at a phenomenal pace until it was the hottest form of music around.

Bonnaroo 2011: The Greenest Music Festival of 2011?

I'm a huge fan of the "best of" shows they have on cable television from time to time. Whether it's a top 100 list of 80s tunes, the best rock songs, or America's favorite movies, seeing how your favorites stack up is always a good time. Sometimes the music or films that you like the most don't rate as high as you think they should and then the debate begins. What does this have to do with haunting and creepy songs, you ask?

VIDEO: Linkin Park Packs Red Square For Transformers 3

As part of Linkin Park’s ongoing musical involvement with the Transformers franchise, the band drew thousands to Red Square in Moscow for a special performance. I’m not sure I have ever seen a movie promoted quite like this one. We’ve been inundated with trailers for Dark Of The Moon, giving us rousing sneak peeks into the epic CGI and special effects that have been a mainstay for the films. Somehow, someway, the folks behind the film have 1-upped themselves for the second time. Part of the ground breaking effort to stuff the film down our throats includes one of the most innovative bands of our time; Linkin Park. The band has been involved with the franchise since the very beginning, with a single for each of the films so far. Their new track “Iridescent” will be released as part of the third movie’s soundtrack. One of a kind special effects come along with a one of a kind band. LP is the perfect combo for the movies because of their technologically advanced sound. They incorporate electronica, rock, and even hip-hop into their music, which marries perfectly with Chester and Mike’s vocals. To me, their songs are epic, just like Transformers. [...]

Last week we got to see a few photos of mama Sarah Jessica Parker and her twin daughters Marion Loretta and Tabitha Hodge as they stepped out into the brisk Autumn afternoon in NYC. Today we get to see a new batch of even cuter photos of SJP and the girls out with hubby/daddy Matthew Broderick over the weekend:

The only thing missing from this perfect family portrait … is SJP and MB‘s eldest son James Wilkie. It’s possible that Jimmy was feelin’ a bit too old to go to the playground with his parents and baby sisters but it would’ve been nice to see the family all together … still, it looks like the fam had a great time :) Aren’t the little girls just so cute?

Tips For A Girly Yet Wild Bedroom Make Over

Trooping the Colour is the name of the parade to mark the Sovereigns Birthday, which is a tradition that was started by Kind George III in 1760. The only time that this tradition was not upheld was during the war years and in 1955 when a national rail strike forced the event to be cancelled. The Queen has two birthdays, her actual birthday on 21st April and her Official birthday takes place in June; in 2011 it will be 11th June. It is usually on the Queen's Official birthday that the Trooping of the Colour in London takes place.

Dream Theater Lyrics

Jazz comes in many varieties and in this article I will be comparing and contrasting 3 of these styles including New Orleans Jazz, Harlem Stride, and the White Jazz. For the New Orleans Style I am using the song "Potato Head Blues" by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Seven and for Harlem Stride I chose the song "Charleston" by James P. Johnson and lastly I chose the song "There Ain't No Sweet Man" by Paul Whitman to represent White Jazz.
